Campaign Update on "Sarah Palin's Alaska"
See what Defenders and YOU have achieved together, and what else we plan to do.
Breaking News! TLC just revised the description of Sarah Palin's show. Discovery Shareholders meeting is today and they're feeling the heat. Let's keep the pressure on!
"The program will be character driven and centered around Sarah Palin and the pioneering people who make up our 49th state. There will be no politics, policy or advocacy associated ...with this program. It is not a nature documentary, a travelogue nor will it endorse any natural resource or wildlife management policies."
While this falls short of cancelling the show, it is better than the "nature" show they had apparently planned.
We've overwhelmed their Facebook fan pages for TLC, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. And we're bombarding their Twitter feeds, too. Keep the messages going by visiting their fan pages and voicing your opinion on Sarah Palin's show.
We are running ad campaigns surrounding Discovery's headquarters. Bus shelter ads are already up. And on May 3rd, a dozen ads, including a giant banner that can be seen from Discovery's building, will saturate the ad spaces in the metro station. This is all made possible by YOU -- help us keep it going.
- More than 500,000 Defenders and other supporters have sent messages to urge Discovery Communications to drop Sarah Palin's new show on Alaska and its outdoors! Help us keep the momentum going by taking action now or by spreading the word!
- Rodger Schlickeisen, Defenders of Wildlife President, has sent a powerful letter to Discovery Communications, expressing our outrage.
"Unless Mark Burnett Productions intends to shine a light on the reality of Palin's extreme views, any final product would be viewed by millions as disingenuous at best and insulting at worst..." Read the entire letter.
- Media such as the L.A. Times and Huffington Post have now turned their attention to this issue.
Huffington Post: Discovery Channel Insider: Sarah Palin's Show Is "a New All Time Low for Discovery"
Last week Discovery had its annual sales conference for ad buyers for all of its 13 networks. The presentation showcases all of their new shows across the different networks. That night the presentation was on Sarah Palin's Alaska.
Our source says "the whole thing [was] comical." Apparently the ad buyers were not impressed. This Discovery insider said, "When the promo was over, people (employees and buyers) were rolling their eyes, snickering, and even laughing. People were laughing and it's not even a comedy. No one took it seriously."

L.A. Times: Wildlife group urges Discovery to drop Sarah Palin's docu-series
Now, as Palin prepares to begin work on the docu-series, tentatively titled "Sarah Palin's Alaska," the Defenders have swung into action again.
Through its EyeOnPalin website, the group is urging its supporters to take action against Palin's series, which the chief executive of TLC's parent company, Discovery Communications, says will "reveal Alaska's powerful beauty as it has never been filmed, and as told by one of the state's proudest daughters."
The Defenders is urging those who oppose Palin's stances on wildlife to sign a petition urging Discovery to drop "Sarah Palin's Alaska."
