Only a Homo Sapiens soils its own nest -

What we share sustains us.

We're all in this together - homo sapiens, the animals, the plants, the very soil and air we seem to delight in polluting and ripping apart. Our species' name (sapiens) would indicate a high degree of intelligent understanding; yet we seem to still need to learn that we do not exist independent of our planetary ecosystem, including all of its components, of which we are only one. Each iota of damage done to those with whom we share this planet is another drop added to the sea of our own destruction. Preserving wildlife is important to me because I love the earth and the creatures who share that earth with me. But even if I did not, it is still important because I wish to survive myself, and ensuring the survival of my planet and co-creatures is the price of my own survival.
