Lobos Back on Track

Until nearly 12 years ago, the Mexican wolf -- also known as the lobo -- was extinct in the wild. Wolf recovery in the Southwest has stagnated since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) handed over control to a multi-agency team that spent more time appeasing anti-wolf interests rather than helping restore lobos to healthy numbers.

Now, thanks to a settlement in a lawsuit brought by Defenders and our conservation partners, the future is brighter for the mere 52 lobos left in the wild. FWS will reclaim its rightful role in the recovery of these rare wolves.

Lifeline for Belugas on the Brink

Alaska’s endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales will have their home waters protected under a proposal announced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). More than one third of the Cook Inlet's waters off the coast of Anchorage would be protected to help ensure recovery of these marine mammals.

The Cook Inlet belugas were listed as endangered earlier this year, thanks in part to the more than 80,000 messages sent by Defenders supporters urging federal officials to take action. Now, officials need to hear from you on their plan to protect these struggling whales’ home.

Wild 'Zine

Finally, an outdoor magazine that’s more about the challenges facing our planet and its wildlife and less about promoting fancy gear.

Wend magazine aims to forge a connection between its hip, outdoor recreation-focused readers and today’s important conservation issues.

Editor Stiv Wilson says, “Most outdoor writing focuses on hero-worship. We’re focused on conservation.”

This past fall, the quarterly magazine put its money where its mouth is by hosting a mini-bike race fundraiser, where contestants donned costumes of their favorite wild animals to support Defenders’ work!

But it’s not all fun and games at Wend’s Portland, Oregon office. The magazine has spoken out against the aerial-gunning of Alaska’s wolves and mountain top removal in West Virginia. Wend also provides Defenders with space on its Greenery Blog to post about our latest work.

“It’s all about creating a global community for people who have a stake in this planet,” Wilson says.
